I was in the US Army from July
1962 until July 1970. During this time I spent 2 years in
Vietnam. My first assignment after basic at Ft. Ord, Ca. was
with
the 129th Ord. Co. Ft. Hood, Tx. as a track and wheeled vehicle
mechanic. I was reassigned to Ft. Lewis in Sept. 1964.
While at Ft. Lewis I attended helicopter repair school in Ft.
Eustis TDY.
I went to Vietnam from Ft. Lewis with Hq and Co. A
704th Maint. Bn. 4th Infantry Div as a shop supply clerk. 2
months after arriving I was transfered to the 119th Assault Helicopter
Co. at Camp Holloway near Pleiku because my mos was helicopter repair.
While with the 119th I served as a crew chief on UH-1, Huey,
helicopters.
After returning stateside I was assigned to the
helicopter school at Ft. Rucker and spent the next 18 months or so
teaching UH-1 maintenance.
I was sent back to Vietnam in July 1969 after completing helicopter tech inspector
school at Ft. Eustis.
My
first assignment was with B Co. 159th ASHB, a Chinook unit at Camp Eagle.
I transfered from there to C Bty. 4/77 Aerial Rocket Arty
(AH-1 Cobras) at Camp
Evans after about 2 months.
I was assigned as a crew chief but in fact I spent my tour as the motor
Sargent.
After returning stateside I got out of the army and remained out of the
military for 6 years.
In 1976 I joined the Oregon National Guard where I spent 2 years before
leaving them and joining the Oregon Air National guard. I retired
from the OANG in 1990 with a total of 22 years of service.
One thing I learned ........... I should have joined the USAF in the
first place!!
